About This Audiobook

Three early novels set in the same universe as The Left Hand of Darkness introduce the Hainish Cycle's fundamental concerns. In Rocannon's World, a stranded Earth scientist leads a liberation struggle across a planet of three alien humanoid races. In Planet of Exile, a centuries-isolated human colony and a nomadic alien people must overcome mutual fear to survive an unimaginably long winter. In City of Illusions, a man with no memory wanders a far-future Earth, searching for who he was and why the truth has been hidden from him. Le Guin's characteristic preoccupations, identity, contact, and the ethics of power, are visible in each.

Michael Crouch and Alyssa Bresnahan share the narration across the three novels, and their complementary voices give the omnibus a varied texture that suits the distinct tones of each story. Crouch handles the epic, action-forward register of the first two novels with authority, while Bresnahan brings the more interior, psychological quality of City of Illusions its proper weight. At just under seventeen hours, this is an excellent introduction to Le Guin's Hainish universe.
