Miss Marple visits an old friend living in a Victorian mansion that has been converted into a rehabilitation center for troubled youth. The setting itself makes her uneasy, and her instincts prove correct when a shooting during a staff meeting turns out to be merely the visible edge of something darker. Christie builds the puzzle around the disparity between the obvious crime and the real one, playing with timing and misdirection to keep the solution hidden in plain sight.

Emilia Fox brings an understated intelligence to Miss Marple that suits the character's deceptive ordinariness. Her narration conveys the polite concern beneath which Marple's sharp analytical mind is constantly working. At just over six and a half hours, this is a tightly structured Christie mystery that rewards careful listening.
