Elizabeth George's twentieth Inspector Lynley novel is also a rich character study of Barbara Havers operating without her usual partner, tested by the isolation and forced to trust her own judgment.

Simon Vance's performance earned the Audie Award for Mystery, and it is easy to understand why. He gives each resident of Ludlow a distinct voice without descending into caricature, and he honors the novel's deliberate pacing, allowing the moral weight of the story to accumulate rather than rushing toward resolution. At nearly 23 hours, this is a substantial listen that rewards patience.
