Scotland Yard's Ian Rutledge is driving aimlessly after his sister's wedding when he comes upon a car stopped in a desolate road, a woman standing beside it with blood on her hands and a man dead at her feet. She insists a stranger stepped from nowhere, fired a single shot, and vanished before she could see his face. Rutledge takes the case, but as further suspicious deaths follow and the suspect's history in the village of Wolf Pit emerges, the investigation forces him into terrain uncomfortably close to his own psychological damage.

Simon Prebble has narrated the Ian Rutledge series with a consistent understanding of what makes the character distinctive: the shell-shock survivor whose investigative instincts and emotional fragility are inseparable. His performance gives Rutledge's voice the weight of someone carrying a permanent burden while still doing the work of living in the world.
