About This Audiobook
In the aftermath of the Third Poppy War, Rin has survived at a terrible cost: she ended the war by unleashing a god's fire, burning an island and its population to ash. Now addicted to opium, hunted by her own guilt, and hunted by the Empress she helped betray, she joins forces with the Dragon Warlord to overthrow the Nikan throne. R.F. Kuang draws on the Chinese Civil War and Republican era as her historical model, making the politics as devastating as the battlefield sequences.
Emily Woo Zeller has narrated the Poppy War trilogy throughout, and her performance in this middle volume carries the accumulated weight of a character the listener has watched transform from a desperate student into something harder and more frightening. Zeller captures Rin's moral compromise without turning her into a simple villain, which requires considerable vocal range. Her consistent delivery of Kuang's brutal material makes the series' darkness feel purposeful rather than gratuitous.
