It is 1939 and the Soviet Union is close to war with Germany and close to bankruptcy. Stalin sends his most trusted investigator, Inspector Pekkala, back to the Siberian Gulag where Pekkala himself was once a prisoner, to find the legendary gold of Tsar Nicholas II. To locate it, Pekkala must infiltrate a gang of convicts still loyal to the Tsar, and his investigation uncovers a murdered man whose mission connects to buried files in the secret Archive 17 and a conspiracy with implications for the Soviet Union's survival.

Steven Pacey has been the voice of the Pekkala series and his command of the Russian historical atmosphere is one of the production's central assets. His Pekkala is a man navigating the contradiction between loyalty to the Tsar he once served and the necessity of serving Stalin, and Pacey gives that contradiction genuine depth. At just under nine hours, this third Pekkala entry is one of the series' most atmospherically rich.
