Free the Darkness

A warrior known only as Rezkin emerges from years of rigorous training in complete isolation when his hidden fortress is destroyed and his masters slaughtered. Armed with exceptional combat skills but lacking any understanding of the outside world, he ventures into the Kingdom of Ashai with cryptic final orders to "kill with conscience" and "protect your friends." The problem is, having lived his entire life in seclusion, Rezkin has no comprehension of what conscience or friendship truly means. As he pursues the lone survivor who might hold answers about his identity and purpose, he awkwardly attempts to fulfill his orders by extending protection to a motley group of companions he encounters.

Nick Podehl delivers a masterful performance that brings depth to Rezkin's fascinating character development from emotionally detached weapon to someone slowly discovering humanity. Podehl skillfully navigates the story's tonal shifts between dark intrigue and unexpected humor, particularly excelling at the awkward yet endearing moments when Rezkin misinterprets social cues while earnestly trying to be a good friend. His distinct characterizations help listeners track the growing ensemble cast, while his pacing allows the worldbuilding and character relationships to unfold naturally across the substantial runtime.
