Beautiful Player is the third Beautiful Bastard novel and follows Hanna Bergstrom, recently emerging from years buried in graduate school, who asks her brother's best friend Will Sumner to help her develop a social life. Sumner, a venture capitalist with a reputation for casual relationships, takes on the project with more personal interest than he intended, and Hanna turns out to be a much more capable student than he anticipated.
Christian Engell and Astrid Johannesen switch the gender dynamic from the first novel, with the male narrator leading more of the early emotional development this time. Their rapport carries the friends-to-lovers transition, and the academic setting gives Hanna's character a specificity that makes her more than a romance archetype.
